3 Sundays, March 10, 17, and 24th, 2:00-3:15pm
A series of 3 lessons on Integrating the chest.
A soft and subtle chest is essential to feeling good and moving well. If you touch the chest of a small child – you will notice how soft and flexible it is. In contrast, for most adults, our rib cages tend to be rigid, mostly fixed. We “forget” how much potential for movement we have in the chest.
A typical human rib cage consists of 24 ribs in 12 pairs, the sternum (breastbone) and the 12 thoracic vertebrae. All of the twelve ribs articulate with the vertebrae of the spine. Each rib forms two joints with the spine at the back. In the front too, where the ribs join the breastbone, the joint is not fixed, but allows potential for small, subtle movement. The ribs themselves are flexible. These tens of joints and the inherent flexibility of the ribs adds up to hundreds if not thousands of possibilities for movement. Yet, how many of these possibilities do we use in our daily lives.
While we all know the importance of the chest in breathing, few of us are aware of the role a supple, soft chest plays in maintaining the health of the shoulders and the spine. The chest also carries our emotions – if we are fixed in our chest, we are also often fixed in our responses to the stimuli of day to day life.
This simple and profoundly effective series will guide you through lessons that integrate and free the chest to provide greater comfort in moving through your upper spine, ribs and shoulders.

Ravi is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement Practitioner. He graduated as an Aeronautical Engineer and followed it with a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration. He has lived and worked in 7 countries in the past 18 years and currently resides in Decatur with his family. He finds endless joy and amazement in learning about the human body and uncovering its potential. Much like Feldenkrais himself, a nagging knee injury led Ravi to look for ways to improve his condition. After trying several forms of therapy, from the conventional to the esoteric, Ravi discovered the Feldenkrais Method, which he feels has been the most effective in addressing the root cause of the pain – an inability to sense oneself. Teaching Awareness Through Movement lessons is his way to explore the work of Moshe Feldenkrais.
