Yoga and the Five Elements with Ali Modell
January 12-14

Yoga is a practice that involves movement, breathing, meditation,
and living in conjunction with the seasons.

In this weekend immersion we will explore the 5 elements
as seen through the lens of Chinese medicine
and their relationship to the principles of classical yoga.

Each session will include lecture on lifestyle ideas, movement/asana,
breath-work, and concentration/meditation practices,
focused on a particular element.

Friday 2:00-4:30pm
Wood

correlates to the spring season, and is about birth.

The wood element is about the “bending and straightening” of things, or having the characteristics of growth and movement. It correlates to the spring season, east direction and the qualities of determination and assertiveness.
Wood types benefit from exercises like deep, rhythmic breathing.
Friday 6:00-8:30pm
Fire

correlates to the summer season and is about growth.

The fire element is about “flaming upward”, or having the characteristics of heat and upward motion. It correlates to the summer season, south direction and qualities of passion and charisma.
Fire types benefit from exercises like slow yoga.
Saturday 10:00am-12:30pm
Earth

correlates to the late summer season, and is about maturity.

The earth element is about “sowing and reaping”, or about bringing forth phenomena. It correlates to the late summer season (Indian summer), center direction and the qualities of compassion and care for others.
Earth types benefit from exercises like brisk walking.
Saturday 2:00pm4:30pm
Metal

correlates to the fall season, and is about degeneration.

The metal element is about “the working of change”, or the ability to purify and reform. It correlates to the fall season, west direction and the qualities of structured and collected.
Metal types benefit from exercises like flowing yoga.
Sunday 10:00am-12:30pm
Water

correlates to the winter season, and is about dormancy.

The water element is about “the moistening and descending”, or having the qualities of calm and cool and grounded. It correlates to the winter season, north direction and qualities of artistic and thoughtful.
Water types benefit from exercises such as invigorating breath-work.

Each Session is 2.5 Hours
